The Hinyard-Lash Experience: Starring Leslie, Jeff, Esme, Brynn, Han, and other members of the Hinyard-Lash family

Cancun: June 2015

We had a nice summer vacation trip planned to Cabo San Lucas to spend a week at the vacation ownership club that Mimi and Papa are members of. We were supposed to leave on Friday; on Wednesday, we noticed a Hurricane Blanca in the Pacific and heading that way. Long story short, we quickly changed our plans and were able to book a last-minute trip to Cancun instead.

Mimi, Papa and Uncle Patrick met us in Cancun and we spent 6 nights in a nice hotel right on the beach. It was pretty all-inclusive, so we didn’t really need to leave the property much. Our days went like this — nice buffet breakfast, short walk to the beach, then go to the pool, then a poolside lunch, then nap and quiet time in the afternoon, and then another swim at the pool before or after dinner. They had a great kids pool so we spent most of the time there. There was also a kids club that the kids visited a few times. Leslie and Han happened upon a birthday party going on for one of the guests one day so they were invited to join in, and the kids got invited to a few other parties throughout the week.

One day Uncle Patrick and Papa went deep sea fishing and the rest of us went to Xcaret, a giant eco-park about an hour away. Think of it as zoo meets botanical gardens meets water park. We only got to see a fraction of it, even though we were there for almost 8 hours. The “underground river” was a lot of fun — a bit scary at times for Han and Brynn, but they did great. Esme tried snorkeling for the first time and enjoyed it a lot — we even got to bring home the snorkels as souvenirs.

We ventured to another part of the “hotel district” one night for dinner — we were in a bit more quiet laid back area, and this restaurant was definitely more where the spring break crowd hangs out. We had a nice dinner at a Mexican restaurant where the kids were entertained by a mariachi band and balloon animal artist / magician.

Leslie, Patrick and Mimi took a short walk to the El Rey ruins — less than a mile from the hotel — on the last day. It’s not one of the biggest or most impressive ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula, but its location can’t be beat.

It was a nice relaxing week in warm weather with family. Considering the last-minute pivot, it worked out great and while it’s nice to be home, we’re missing the sun and pool already!
