The Hinyard-Lash Experience: Starring Leslie, Jeff, Esme, Brynn, Han, and other members of the Hinyard-Lash family

Brynn’s naming ceremony

Sunday, August 21, 2011

Just like we did for Esme, we had a Hebrew naming ceremony for Brynn. Instead of 6 weeks after the birth, we waited a bit longer this time, coordinating a weekend in July when at least some of the family could make it out in person.

The ceremony was led by Rabbi Randy, who co-officiated our wedding nearly 8 years ago, and performed Esme’s naming ceremony. We decided against holding it outside (well, the weather prevented it) so luckily the living room was able to fit everyone.

The real purpose was for Brynn to get her Hebrew name: Shifrah Hadar. Shifrah was one of the midwives in Egypt who refused the Pharoah’s orders to kill all firstborn Jews. This story may sound familiar, as Puah was the other midwife, and Puah is Esme’s Hebrew first name. In very much the same way as Esme, we think it’s a wonderful story of courage and a strong conscience, and is a great way to tie the two of their names’ together.

Hadar is just a name we liked — it means (depending on which dictionary you consult) beautiful, honored, splendor, and/or glory.

Though we weren’t able to have all the family in person, we had Gigi and Grandpa, Mimi and Papa, and Uncle Patrick, and everyone else was there in spirit. We were also blessed to be surrounded by so many friends, many of whom were present for Esme’s naming ceremony.

Oh, and one last thing — just like for Esme, we had guests write a blessing to be put in Brynn’s blessing box, which she will open around her Bat Mitzvah (age 13). If you’d like to contribute a blessing, please email us and we’ll make sure it’s included. It will be quite a special occasion to open these blessings years from now and read all of the wonderful things which our friends and family wrote to commemorate this occasion and bless Brynn in her childhood and life.
