Esme’s vocabulary
We had one of our regular visits with Jane, our Parents as Teachers person today (great program, by the way), and we were discussing Esme’s vocabulary. Jane asked how many words Esme could say, and we had to think about it for a minute. She mentioned that many people keep a list, just to keep track and for historical purposes, so we thought we’d give it a shot. It seems like every day a new word comes up we haven’t heard before, so this is likely incomplete and obviously will change. Some words Esme says unprompted (favorites include doggie, bye-bye, and again) and some she’ll usually only say when we ask her to say them. And it should also go without saying that not all of these are easily understandable. When pointing to our chihuahua Oliver, it sounds more like “Aw-wa-wa.”
So, without further ado, here’s the list:
dog (usually said as “doggie,” though sometimes as “da-da”)
stay
window
hot dog
apple
elbow
nose
eye
mouth
dad
mom
more
again
read
squirrel
Oliver
Daphne
cheese
book
bye
no
yes
hi
outside
There’s also some animal noises she can make on command — usually by asking her “what sound does a [insert animal name here] make”
quack
neigh
baa
grrrr
meow
(Interestingly enough, though “doggie” was her first real word, and remains one of her favorites, she refuses to say “ruff” or “bark” or anything like that)

We missed a bunch of words here… She’s started repeating back the names of colors too (pink, white) though she doesn’t know what they mean yet. Probably about half of the words above she really “knows” and uses on her own, the other half she says when prompted.
