How do you like them apples?
Fall is slowly coming to St. Louis, and what better way to celebrate (or mourn) the end of summer than to start enjoying some of the great things that fall has to offer. Yesterday, we took a mini road trip to Belleville, IL (50 minute drive) to Eckert’s Orchards. We’ve been meaning to go for several years, though when you have a small child it seems much more appropriate.
We also planned on stopping at a kids’ consignment sale along the way, though it was rather pitiful, leaving the apple orchards as the highlight of the afternoon. The Veety family accompanied us as well, this being Reis’ monumental first trip across state lines. Rather than wait to eat at the country restaurant, we had our own impromptu picnic, courtesy of their general store, topped off with the requisite frozen custard. The finale was of course the opportunity to pick your own apples; Esme was a bit unsure about this, though since she now has 4 teeth in, she was able to actually take a few small bites of fresh-picked fruit. Our bounty was turned into all-natural cinnamon apple sauce later that afternoon, which we’ll hopefully be enjoying for some time. Pictures and video are below…

Those apples look delicious enough to eat – dirt and all! Did Esme finally dig her teeth into it? She’s quite the talent.
