Thumbsucking
First — sorry it’s been so long since we’ve posted. We know many of you are anxious to get your Esme fix. Hopefully you’ll enjoy these pictures, and we’ve got more and some video coming later this week — stay tuned.
Unfortunately, pacifiers have not managed to soothe Esme, nor has she been good about taking a bottle. All of the baby books and advice talks about “self-soothing,” and luckily Esme has been making some progress in that area.
She started to try to suck her hand a few weeks ago. We say “hand” and not “thumb” because at the time, she was just trying to put her whole darn fist in there. She’d get her hand somewhere near her mouth, and maybe about 25% of the time have a successful mouth-to-hand connection. When she did, it was some of the loudest slurping noise you’ve ever heard.
Esme has been getting better at it, and yesterday we were able to get documentation of her actually sucking her thumb. Though you can’t see the thumb itself, trust us, it’s in there. (And, in case you’re wondering, no, she’s not the “big girl” stroller yet. We were at the store testing out a few models to see which we liked and which she fit in best when she decided this was the time to latch on to her hand and not let go.)

You go, girl! Glad to see she takes after her Dad (We don’t know if Mom also did this?)… now all she needs is the “blankie!”

She is definitely getting high marks on intelligence! Beware of the next step when she tries doing the same thing with the big toe of her foot in her mouth. This is where she will probably get her first shot at arobic exercise. She is definitely progressing in the high marks of intelligence. So – what else is new?

Well, Mom, bless her heart, took a pacifier, so was able to self-soothe quite well. But, Mom’s brother Patrick would not take a pacifier nor did he suck his thumb. Esme is much more like her uncle than her mom in the self-soothing department.
