Sleeping like a baby

Monday, October 27, 2008

An update to our post from last week — we’re now up to 5 nights in a row where Esme has slept for 8 hours or more in a row. We’re still getting over the initial shock and trying to adjust our sleeping habits back to a more “normal” schedule. Our regular routine has Esme going to sleep around 9pm and usually waking up around 7am — not bad!

The trick has been to use a nice swaddle blanket to keep her arms contained. We used these special blankets in the first few weeks, though she still was waking up to eat regularly. For whatever reason, we ended up switching to bundling her in regular receiving blankets at night, which worked okay when she went to sleep, except she was able to get out of them too easily.

Last week, after a week or so of some restless nights, we decided to give the swaddle blanket another try and it worked like a charm. After the first few nights it worked, we were just hoping it wasn’t a fluke. Now that we’ve had 5 good nights, we’ve got a good feeling this is a trend. Sure, there will probably be many nights where she’ll wake up, and some where she’ll stay up for a while, though we’ll take these nice long rests when we can get them!

Congratulations! You now have survived phase 1. If my memory serves me, that was a great part of parenthood. However, be prepared for phase 2 when she is able to climb out of the crib and wants to sleep with you guys. My best advise is to take full advantage of this lull in interupted sleep.
    Good luck!
